Joy Oh Joy

Cross-Cultural Misunderstandings, Ex-Pat Interactions and ESL Humor. Personal stories of an English Teacher living in Taiwan.

I'm hyperbolic, in a diminutive kind of way.

What is your bag made of?

Sometimes in my Chinese class my teachers use English to explain a point or two. They all know just enough English to get themselves into trouble and I usually give them enough rope to hang themselves with.

Teacher Tall said to me, “That’s the Chinese word for bag. It doesn’t matter what the bag is made of. Leather, cloth or ashtray.”

“Ashtray?”

“Yes, like this.” She holds up the bag she keeps her pencils in.

“Oh that. Yeah that’s not ashtray, that’s plastic.”

“What’s an astray?”

“That’s where you put your cigarettes when your done with them.”

“Okay, I was way off.”
